It was a rare 6A Premier Region romp Tuesday night at Chandler High's Coy C. Payne Gymnasium. Chandler, the defending region champs, weren't the team that enjoyed the triumph when the final buzzer sounded.

No, No. 9 Brophy Prep turned in what coach Matt Hooten said was its best game of the year in beating the No. 7 Wolves, 68-46. The region is tight as ever after Tuesday night with Hamilton losing to Basha. Hamilton and Brophy lead the region standings at 2-1, Basha is 2-2 and Chandler and Perry are 1-2. Chandler's 5-3 record in region last year garnered it the region title.

Brophy's win this night and its success this season has been predicated on depth. The Broncos played 10 players and all of them scored. They all played at some point in the first half, not just subbed in for the final minute or two.

A recent addition to the Brophy lineup - sophomore transfer Patrick Chew - has allowed the Broncos to elevate their game some. Brophy is 3-0 the last week with Chew in the lineup. Chew became eligible last week contributing in wins over Mountain Pointe, Basha and Chandler.

"We came out to play and have been playing well of late," Hooten said. "Patrick has been huge for us. He gives us another good defender on the perimeter. He does a lot of things well. He's as hard a worker as there is. He's gone right in to the starting lineup. We are a deep team."

Chew, whose family moved from Texas after last season, sat the first nine (power-ranking) games. The out-of-state move didn't trigger the ineligibility. A couple weeks enrollment at Centennial HIgh before transferring to Brophy brought about the wait for his season debut. Chew's father, Isaac, is an assistant coach for Dan Majerle at Grand Canyon University.

Brophy (12-7, 8-4 power-ranking games) never trailed. The Broncos built a 24-14 lead after the first quarter with Chew contributing seven of his 12 points. Sophomore point guard Miles Nash was the offensive catalyst in the second period with seven of his nine points as the the lead grew to 38-23 at half.

Junior guard Desi Burrage grabbed the scoring baton in the third period netting 12 of his 14 points as the Broncos advantage reached 55-33. There was no rally by Chandler in the final quarter.

Chandler (14-6, 9-4 prg) has gone about a reset of sorts since Christmas coach Jonathan Rother mixing in three junior transfers who became eligible - Isaiah Broady, Darian Masi and Elijah Johnson. Broady and Masi have played in seven games and Johnson four.

Broady and Masi have averaged double figures in scoring in their short time moving into the starting lineup. Johnson has played off the bench. The trio combined for just 13 points on Tuesday with Johnson having eight of those.

Newcomer this season Nick Riley, a 6-foot-8 post and a transfer who sat out last season, led the Wolves' in with 14 points, pounding away in the low post for his buckets. Riley was in and out of the lineup with foul trouble and a factor only in the first and third quarters.

Chandler's leading scorer, junior guard Carson Kelly, was limited to nine points and no baskets frm the perimeter. Kelly averages 22 points a game.
