Girls, boys hoops: Chinle senior standout Cooper Burbank erupts for 35 points

GIRLS
CHINLE 69, WINDOW ROCK 47
Meishla Begay, Aisha Ashley and Tea Murray combined for 46 points to help lead the Chinle Lady Wildcats to a 69-47 victory over the Window Rock Lady Scouts in a 3A North Region girl's basketball action in the Wildcat Den in Chinle on Friday night.
Ashley rattled the cages for 18 points. Begay added 15 points and Murray canned 13 points in a winning effort for Chinle.
Chinle head coach Fran McCurtain was happy with the Lady Wildcats' performance on both ends of the hardwood.
"Our girls did a great job tonight," McCurtain said. "The girls worked really well, executing as a team and making sure we took care of the ball. The girls communicating was all on point. Window Rock did a great job as well."
Chinle led by two points, 12-10, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Scouts, 18-8, in the second period. Chinle held a 30-18 halftime advantage.
Chinle stepped up, canning 19 points, while Window Rock netted 17 points in the third stanza. Chinle held a 49-35 lead when the third quarter expired. The Lady Wildcats knocked down 20 points and the Lady Scouts poured in 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Jana Solee led Window Rock with 14 points and Bayle Talkalai tallied 13 points.
BOYS
CHINLE 59, WINDOW ROCK 40
Chinle 6-foot-3 senior standout guard Cooper Burbank turned in a stellar performance on the hardwood, leading the Wildcats to a 59-40 victory over Window Rock, as the two teams renewed its rivalry in the Wildcat Den in a winter homecoming win for the Wildcats on Friday night.
Burbank erupted for 35 points to lead Chinle to a 3A North Region victory. Burbank poured in 22 points in the first half.
Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza praised the Wildcats' defensive effort and Burbank's offensive showing.
"We did great on defense," Mendoza said, while chalking up a victory against his former team. "Cooper Burbank had an outstanding offensive game that put the game game out of reach."
Chinle raced out to a seven-point lead, 17-10, at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats extended its advantage to, 32-18, at halftime after outscoring Window Rock, 15-8, in the second quarter.
Chinle poured in 10 points to Window Rock's five points in the third period. Chinle held a 42-23 lead when the third quarter expired. Chinle and Window Rock both scored 17 points apiece in the fourth stanza.
Window Rock's Quincy Smith, a transfer from Gallup High School, netted 12 points and Cauy Silversmith added 11 points.
GIRLS
HOLBROOK 56, WINSLOW 45
Nearby schools, Holbrook and Winslow renewed its rivalry on the basketball court.
Holbrook Roadrunners outpointed Winslow Lady Bulldogs, 56-45, in a 3A East Region battle on Friday night.
Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins said the Roadrunners played well, en route to its victory.
"The girls played well," Perkins said. "We were able to get out in transition and build a lead. Winslow is tough and came back on us, but my girls held on. It was a good power point win and a good region win."
Winslow held a 12-8 first quarter lead. Holbrook battled back in the second quarter, outscoring Winslow, 16-3, for a 24-15 halftime advantage.
Winslow and Holbrook both tallied 15 points apiece in the third quarter. The Roadrunners took a 39-30 advantage at the end of the third period. Holbrook outscored Winslow, 17-16, in the fourth quarter.
Matehya Aberle poured in 22 points to pace Holbrook, Madison Chappell added 13 points and Desirae tallied 10 points for Holbrook.
Andrea Willeto topped Winslow with 19 points and Brianna Little netted 12 points.
"Tonight's game was a har fought game by both teams," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan.
BOYS
WINSLOW 57, HOLBROOK 48
The Winslow Bulldogs chalked up a 57-48 win over the Holbrook Roadrunners in a 3A East Regiojn boy's basketball game on Friday night.
Holbrook held a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Winslow netted 22 points to Holbrook's 11 points for a 31-24 lead at halftime.
The Roadrunners battled back in the third period, tallying 16 points. Winslow canned 14 points. Winslow took a 45-40 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Winslow knocked down 12 points to Holbrook's eight points in the fourth frame.
Tyrell Young poured in 18 points, Zachary Wagner added 15 points and Dustin Richard tallied 11 points for Winslow.
"Our defense was really good," said Winslow head coach Scott Crum. "We held Eric Baldonado to nine points and Kobi Kooperich to zero points. We had good balance scoring with three guys in double figures and eight players in the scoring cloumn. The three point shots continue to be a strong weapon for us, as we hit eight tonight. We had 16 three's in our last game against Show Low and 13 three's in the game before that against Tuba City."
Anthony Nelson tallie 17 points for Holbrook, followed by Ethan Bahe with 15 points.
