Sahuaro junior Alyssa Brown scored 38 points to pace the Cougars past Buena 57-45 to win the championship of the Flowing Wells Shootout Saturday night. In doing so, Brown became the all-time leading scorer in Sahuaro history.
Brown’s sister Sydney Harden held the previous mark of 1,575. Former standout Cashala Thompson (2007-11) finished with 1,544 and Michelle Vielledent (1989-93) had 1,408. Olivia Harden (2009-12) scored 312 points giving the three sisters a combined 3,470 career points and counting.
“I grew up idolizing my sisters and it’s shocking to be in the same place with people I looked up to,” Brown said. “This means a lot to me.”
Sahuaro led from beginning to end but the Cougars had difficulty shaking Buena due to eight 3-pointers drained by the Colts. Lydia Griffith finished with 12 points to lead Buena and she hit three of the bombs in the first quarter.
Another 3 from Nohema Romo cut the Cougar lead down to 31-24 seconds into the third quarter but that was as close as Buena would get the rest of the way.
“We have a good mix of experience and youth on our team and we’re trying harder to get better each game,” Griffith said. “This is my senior year and I plan on enjoying it while doing the best that I can on the court.”
Georgetown, Texas beat Marana 64-38 to take third place and Thatcher beat Amphitheater 57-38 to win the consolation championship.
