Corona del Sol's top two offensive threats were a tag-team Tuesday night. Alternating scoring bursts, seniors Anthony Irvin and Eric Blackwell guided the Aztecs take down of Mesa Mountain View, 68-57, at Sammy Duane Gymnasium/Larry Hughes Court.
Corona improved to 7-3 overall and more importantly to 5-1 in power-ranking games. Mountain View slipped to 3-7, 1-5 in power-ranking affairs.
"We had good nights from them (Irvin-Blackwell), but they're a very good defensive team and well-coached," Corona del Sol coach Neil MacDonald said. "It's been a busy stretch for us and we need a few days off. In our six games we're a jumper away from being 6-0, so we're happy about that."
Corona had a tough time ditching Mountain View. The Aztecs used a 12-0 run the final four minutes of the first quarter to open up a 16-9 lead. A couple minutes into the second quarter, Mountain View was withing a bucket and tied the game several times before leaving the floor for halftime down, 32-30.
Another stretch late in the third quarter - the final 3 1/2 minutes - bumped Corona back to a 51-40 lead.
A three to start the final quarter by Mountain View's Kolby Doka cut the lead to eight. The Aztecs ended any rally hopes with an 8-0 run buoyed by six of Irvin's game-high 25 points. Irvin hit a 3 with 4:58 left and forced a Toros' timeout with a comfortable 59-43 advantage.
Blackwell, a 6-foot-2 guard, scored seven points in the first period -- all his scoring in the first half. Irvin, a versatile 6-4 performer, poured in 10 points in the second quarter giving him 14 at intermission.
Blackwell connected for eight points in the third period, with a pair of threes and two free throws. Blackwell finished with 17 points. Irvin took control of the scoring with eight points in the final quarter.
Guards Kyle Lemish and Blake Wolfe paced Mountain View with 17 points and 11 points, respectively. They connected on six of the seven threes the Toros made in the game.
Both teams are idle for the next 10 days. They'll resume action in the annual Visit Mesa Basketball Challenge at Mountain View Dec. 26-28 and Dec. 30. Corona opens play in the tourney against Rancho Solano and Mountain View battles Mercer Island (WA) on Dec. 26.
