Flowing Wells standout Khalid Whitaker punched his ticket to the 1,000-point club with a bucket in the second quarter against Cienega and Douglas senior Francisco Lugo did the same moments later in a game at home against Desert View.

Whitaker finished with a team-high 24 points in a 73-55 loss to the Bobcats and Desert View beat Douglas 59-54.

The Caballeros fell to 2-7 on the year and the Bobcats improved to 6-1. Cienega led for most of the game with JT Elder pouring in 24 points to lead the Bobcats. Diego Mendoza added 12, Carson Mott scored 11 and Jose Santiago-Rivera scored 10. DJ Apedjinou scored 14 points to compliment the 24 scored by Whitaker.

Desert View is now 3-5 and Douglas is 3-6 on the year.

Benson standout Emily Darwin broke into the 1,000-point club in the preseason Boyd Baker tournament and Tanque Verde standout Emma Morris appears to be next in line with 915 career points. St. Augustine junior Thomas Reyna has 896 career points on the boy’s side.

Sahuaro junior Alyssa Brown has 1,368 career points and she is only 207 points away from breaking the school record held by her older sister, Sydney Harden. Only seven games into her junior season, Brown is on pace to score at least 2,500 career points.
