Defending FB champs will cruise, other matchups to watch

The most recent kingpins of the various football divisions are at or near the top of their games. But a few with double-digit seeds may make some noise in the first round of postseason Friday (Nov. 4).
The top seeds -- D-I Hamilton vs. Valley Vista, D-II Chaparrral vs. Gila Ridge, D-III Sabino vs. Campo Verde, D-IV Blue Ridge vs. Coolidge and (D-V) Northwest Christian -- smack mostly of running clock by the third period.
But don't fret. There are games that will be competitive, even from higher seeds. Several teams one would normally count one-and-done, could make their single-digit foes sweat.
Heading the list is No. 15 seed in Division I, Mountain Pointe (D-I). Unbeaten Brophy Prep figured it deserved a better reward in the first-round, but not so with the Pride. Mountain Pointe (6-4) is hardly a No. 15 seed. The Pride was handled by Brophy, 31-14, on the final day of September. Mountain Pointe rushed for nearly 300 yards in that game. The Pride lacked the balance Brophy displayed that night as the Broncos ran and threw for over 160 yards. Mountain Pointe was 2-4 after that game with losses to the No. 1, 2, 3 and 9 seeds in the tournament. Brophy (10-0) has wins over six playoff teams, including No. 5 Red Mountain and No. 8 Westview. The Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs last year by Mountain Pointe.
At No. 10 in D-I is Tucson High, making only its second playoff appearance in the new millennium. The Badgers have speed and some playmakers. They'll test No. 7 Basha, which needs to play well defensively to pump up its aspirations for a deep playoff run. Basha can score with anyone. Tucson's opportunity rests in trying to outscore the Bears, who would like to erase last year's first-round exit at get a shot at either Brophy or Mountain Pointe in the quarterfinals.
In Division II perennial power Canyon del Oro is a 10 seed and visits No. 7 Marcos de Niza. The Dorados don't have the firepower of recent years, but if they can display ball control might be able to neutralize the speed and opportunities of Marcos de Niza.
Don't expect upsets from double-digit seeds in Division III, IV or V. An interesting matchup in D-III is Thunderbird at Williams Field (9 vs. 8). They played for the 4A-II championship last year with T-Bird prevailing in overtime.
As is usually the case, the 9 vs. 8 games are ones to note. Those matchups are Chandler at Westview (D-I), Lake Havasu at Perry (D-II), Fountain Hills at Buckeye (D-IV) and Tempe Prep at Scottsdale Christian (D-V).
Westview has shown plenty of moxy in moving up from 5A-II and gave unbeaten Brophy its toughest game. Lake Havasu at Perry may be one that isn't so close. Perry has played very well all season and should take advantage of Lake Havasu's lighter schedule. Scottsdale Christian and Tempe Prep met in late September with SCA prevailing, 24-20. Fountain Hills and Buckeye have played a variety of schools - many up or down a division or two. Fountain Hills gave D-IV No. 4 seed Seton its toughest game in the season opener. Buckeye has losses to D-V power Yuma Catholic and D-III playoff qualifier Desert Edge.
