The Saguaro Sabercats girls volleyball team suffered tough back-to-back against the Poston Butte Broncos and the Mesquite Wildcats. For the second time this season, the Sabercats fell to the Wildcats 3-0 on Thursday night.

Although they lost, there were little wins on the court. With three of the team's starters out due to injuries, all of the players had to step up and play in positions they are not used to.

“We have girls playing a little bit out of position and aren’t as confident as they would be if they were in their primary positions,” said head coach Tim Church.

Now that the Sabercats are out of the push for a playoff spot, it is time to try new things and see what they can do when they are asked to step out of their comfort zone.

All three sets were close, and there was an obvious improvement from the last time Saguaro and Mesquite came together. Saguaro had many moments of glory, but their mistakes got the best of them when the time was crucial.

Making mistakes is one thing for this team, but how they react to them is a downfall the girls are working to overcome.

“We beat ourselves more than any team I’ve ever coached," Church said. "They are very capable, but they tend to compound their errors."

Learning to bounce back from mistakes comes with time and experience. This team is as young and has time to grow.

“Being a young team gives us the opportunity to grow,” said team captain Emma White. "Even though there hasn’t been a lot of wins,  it has shown us what we can improve on.”

Due to the injuries, some JV players were asked to play in the varsity match.

“It was really awesome to see how well they play with girls on varsity and it was really exciting to see them out on the court,” said sophomore Madison Albertson. “It was kind of fun to switch it up a little bit.”

The girls have used this season to learn a lot and will continue to learn in their last few games.

“I have a lot of girls that I’m excited to see grow in the next two, three years in the program. And that growth is going to start right now,” said Church.
