Every yard gained from here on out will be a new state record. Guaranteed.

That’s what happens when a record that’s stood for 17 years is broken with at least five games left in a career. Five games for a player like Salpointe’s Bijan Robinson is like a full season for other running backs and it’s like a career for the rest of us. But that would be one heck of a career.

Robinson rushed for 130 yards against Sahuaro Friday night and, in doing so, he passed former Tolleson standout Marcus Tolleson for the most rushing yards gained in career by a back competing at the highest levels. Tolleson finished his career with 5,878 rushing yards and Robinson is sitting at 5,924.

Salpointe is undefeated at 5-0 and Robinson rushed for 1,123 yards in that span at over 23 yards a carry. His numbers through half the season would be good enough for a top 20 spot in the 4A Conference for all of last year. Though he now holds the record for 4A-6A, Robinson is now third in all of Arizona regardless of classification.

Former River Valley standout Brandon Long (2011-14) finished his career with 6,750 yards at the 3A level and former Northwest Christian standout Casey Jahn (7,544) is tops in the 2A Conference. Former Canyon del Oro and University of Arizona standout Ka’Deem Carey finished with 5,701 yards when he graduated in 2010 and that number is good enough for seventh all-time.

Robinson is chasing several records.

He rushed for 2,023 yards as a sophomore and 2,400 yards as a junior. At his rate, he would be the first running back in Arizona to go for over 2,000 yards three times.

Robinson came into the game with Sahuaro with 91 career touchdowns. He added five to that number to pace the Lancers to a 58-13 win. Former Saguaro and current Arizona Cardinals standout Christian Kirk graduated in 2014 with 103 TDs to his name. At 96, Robinson is only seven TDs from that state record. Jahn graduated with 112 career TDs to lead the lower levels.

Robinson also broke the 4A-6A career rushes for a TD with 86, passing Carey (82) and former Peoria standout Jamal Miles (83).

Robinson has 578 career points. Kirk finished with 626 in his career.

The loss dropped Sahuaro to 6-1 on the year with another big game on horizon with a visit to Canyon del Oro (6-0) coming this Friday while Salpointe hosts Casa Grande (4-2).

The win over Sahuaro most likely solidifies a spot in the Open Division for the Lancers, especially after entering the night ranked No. 2 in that poll of eight teams. Scottsdale Saguaro beat up Desert Edge 63-14 and it looks like the Sabercats might move into the Open Division next week while Sahuaro drops out.

The Cougars were ranked No. 7 in the Open Division and No. 2 in the 4A Conference coming in but a loss to a team like Salpointe should come with plenty of power points to keep the Cougars in line for a home game in the 4A playoffs at the very least.

No. 3 Hamilton lost to No. 14 Brophy Prep 27-14 Friday night in the Open Division rankings and that could cause some interesting conversation when the new rankings come out on Tuesday afternoon.
