Williams Field couldn't have done better on offense in the first half of Friday's 5A San Tan Region clash with Gilbert.

The Black Hawks were 6 for 6 in a key category. Not third-down conversions or passes completed in succession. Better than that. Six-for-six scoring on each first-half possession that took its toll on visiting Gilbert and ultimately a 52-28 triumph.

"It was a really good first half," Williams Field coach Steve Campbell said. "We were a little foggy in the second half, but overall lI iked what we did."

Williams Field (5-2, 2-0 region) won for the fifth time in a row. Its offense did whatever it wanted piling up 522 yards of offense (249 rushing and 273 passing). Gilbert fell to 3-4, 0-2 in region. Turnovers have figured prominently in its two region defeats.

Senior quarterback Mason Bugg continues to impress in his first year piloting Williams Field's attack. Bugg completed 13 of 17 passes for all of th 273 yards through the air. He passed for two TDs (one each to Josh Gale and Kendrix Lurry) and ran for two more. For the season his efficiency has been exceptional - 14 TD passes to one interception. He's completed 63 percent of his attempts.

Williams Field's ground game wasn't too shabby either. Running backs Kendrix Lurry and Kaden Cloud churned out about 200 of the 249 rushing yards. Lurry scored three times - two rushing and the Black Hawks' final TD on a 20-yard reception from Bugg in the fourth quarter. Cloud scored to close the first-half output.

"We've worked at not being so predictable on offense," Campbell said. "We're making the transition to be more balanced in what we do."

Williams Field and Gilbert scored 63 of the game's 80 points in the first half. Williams Field led at halftime 42-28. The teams essentially traded TDs for the first seven of nine tallied the first 30 minutes. The deficit for Gilbert in the opening half was due to a pair of short fields it gave Williams Field.

Gilbert senior quarterback Will Plummer fumbled on the Tigers' second possession of the game. Williams Field recovered at the Gilbert 15 and punched it in. Late in the second quarter a low snap out of punt formation eluded the Tigers punter and Williams Field took over again at Gilbert's 15.

Plummer was in on all four Gilbert touchdowns. He ran for two short scores and passed for two - one each to Blake Barnhardt and Briggs Dupree. For the game Plummer was 25 for 44 for 349 yards. He was intercepted twice, both in the fourth period. The first was in the red zone as the Tigers tried to answer Williams Field's only TD of the second half.

"The turnovers hurt us," Gilbert coach Derek Zellner said. "We can score with anybody, but we're making too many mistakes on basic things. Lining up, motion penalties. Not staying home on the defensive front. Those things add up and have cost us."

Both schools have byes next week and won't play again until Oct. 18. Williams Field visits Maricopa and Gilbert travels to Casteel.
