Mtn. Pointe spoils Corona's night, records volleyball sweep

It was Senior Night for Corona del Sol's girls volleyball team. The Aztecs also had a cable television crew in house to take notice of them and visiting Mountain Pointe.

The only ones wanting to watch the replay or purchase a DVD of the contest at the end of the evening, however, was Mountain Pointe.

Winning two tight first games, Mountain Pointe left no doubt who the better team was in the third game Tuesday night as the Pride swept the Aztecs, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-10.

"When we play Corona, we expect it to be close," Mountain Pointe coach Fred Mann said. "We don't win over here very often. I don't know if we've ever won in three (games)."

The teams met earlier this season in early September and that one went as Mann decribed, a five-set match won by Mountain Pointe, 3-2.

Mountain Pointe, which was led by senior outside Brenna Wagner's 11 kills, won the first two games in different  fashion. The Pride opened up a 19-9 advantage in the first game only to see Corona come back during and tie the game at 21. That sequence was the only real lull all night for Mountain Pointe. They rebounded in time to close out the first game with a game-clinching kill by Kayla Meester.

Neither team led by more than three points in Game 2. But again at crunch time, Mountain Pointe made the plays. A kill and block by Wagner helped Mountain Pointe to a 23-20 lead. Kills by Carly Davies and Lexie Nelson were the deciding points.

Any chance of a Corona comeback was doused by Mountain Pointe's early getaway in Game 3. The Pride bolted to a 12-2 lead and was never threatened.

"Mountain Pointe played great," Corona del Sol coach Ben Maxfield said. "We had lots of unforced errors, and digs we could have made we didn't.....
"Our first ball was not good. We were never really able to get in system."

Wagner added three blocks to go with her 11 kills for Mountain Pointe. Mikayle Holm had three aces and Meester chipped in with 10 digs. Corona was led by Jamie Burt with nine kills and two blocks, Alexa Moser with seven kills and Caroline Trent with four blocks.
