If there was a set Wednesday night Queen Creek had a chance to win it was the opening set against visiting Corona del Sol. The Bulldogs couldn't pull it off and the rest of the evening proved short and sweet -- at least for Corona.

Corona del Sol ran its record to 2-0 with its second sweep in as many nights in this opening week of the prep volleyball season knocking off the hosts 25-20, 25-14, 25-10.

A little extra reward for Corona came in the form of the match being of the 6A Central Region variety. The more experienced and deeper Aztecs, runners-up in 6A the last two seasons and champs in 2016, showed in the final two sets they will be tough to beat for most if not all comers.

"Got off a little slow, but the last two sets we passed really well and were in system the whole time," Corona coach Ben Maxfield said. "We have a lot of weapons. Our setters did a good job moving it around."

Queen Creek (1-1) stayed with Corona in the first set. The Bulldogs trailed 22-18 after a Meyer kills, but managed to pull within 22-20 thanks to an ace from Bulldogs hitter Kylee Brinkerhoff. Noble checked in with her lone kill of the opening set and McNulty finished the set with back-to-back kills.

Corona del Sol never trailed in the second or third set and dominated play save one stretch in the second when Queen Creek tallied five successive points. Those only cut a 12-point deficit to seven.

Senior outside hitters Madelyn Noble and Nicole Newlin registered 10 kills apiece to lead Corona's attack. Newlin notched most of hers in the first two sets while Noble had nine of her 10 in the final two sets. Another senior, Morgan McNulty checked in with seven kills and a freshman Ella Lomigora chipped in six. Add a few each from middles Natalie Meyer and Sadie McRae and there was much for the Bulldogs to defend.

Rounding out the top stat leaders for Corona in the match were setters Ashley Hayden (16 assists) and Anita Babic (14 assists). Libero Becca Morse posted 19 digs and five of Corona's 13 aces. Rachel Mertes contributed 11 digs.

Queen Creek, which won its first match Tuesday vs. Shadow Ridge, returned two starters from last year in middle Samantha Bloom and setter Jaden Drollinger. They lost however, their top two offensive threats to graduation and transfer. The Bulldogs were led unofficiually on the attack by Bloom with five kills.

Queen Creek finishes its week on Thursday with a match at Red Mountain. Corona next competes Friday and Saturday in Chandler's House of Payne Invite.
