Mesquite, Corona del Sol claw for berths with tough finishes
October 12, 2011 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365
The schedule maker showed little regard to to most Division I, Section II footballl teams. That is more apparent for Mesquite and Corona del Sol, who still have a pulse in bids for postseason berths.
Corona del Sol is 4-3 entering Friday's home game with Chandler (5-2)nd needs to win two of its final three games to have a shot at the playoffs. The Aztecs bugaboo is not beating a playoff-caliber team from the East Valley, where the strength of D-I rests.
Corona has dropped games to Basha, Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista. The Aztecs' wins are over Dobson, Highland, Westwood and Cibola. None of Corona's games have been close either way. The smallest margin of victory iwas an 18-point win over Highland.
Chandler has a couple quality wins and gave Hamilton one of its better games this season. The Wolves defeated Red Mountain and Mesquite, teams still in the hunt. The trend doesn't look good for Corona in this one, particularly with Mesquite and Hamilton looming the final two weeks of the season.
Mesquite (3-4) likely needs to win out. They will have to play flawlessly Friday against visiting Desert Vista (6-1) to get to .500. Their final two games are winnable with Corona del Sol and D-II Deer Valley, despite the Skyhawks unbeaten status to date. Mesquite has lost to Hamilton, Chandler, Chaparral and Gilbert. It's win are over Red Mountain, Highland, and Dobson.
Other games of note on Friday in the East Valley and southern Arizona:
Canyon del Oro (4-3) at Tucson (5-2) -- What a difference a year makes. Last year Canyon del Oro was at the top of 4A-I with Saguaro. Tucson was struggling near the bottom of 5A-I. CDO is No.16 in the D-II power rankings and battling to qualify for postseason. Tucson is No. 11 in D-I, but faces a tough obstacle in this one despite D-I status. The Badgers need to record a win in one of their final three games (CDO, Sunnyside and Flowing Wells) to have a legitimate shot at postseason. Cibola (6-1) at Sunnyside (5-2) -- Cibola isn't in danger of missing the D-I playoffs even if it loses this game, but the Raiders need to beat someone other than a Yuma school or Lake Havasu to gain some credibility. Cibola is No. 7 in D-I despite losing by three touchdowns two weeks ago to No. 14 Corona del Sol at home. Sunnyside needs a win to stay in the top 12 in D-I (they are No. 12 this week) and keep coach Glenn Posey's first year at the helm a strong one. Basha (6-1) at Perry (5-2) -- Basha begins a two-week stretch playing sister schools and after next week vs. Basha will become the first of Chandler's high schools to play all its brethern in the same season. The game is bigger for Perry, which is 12th in the D-II power rankings heading into the game and trying to hold on to that spot. Both teams have given up gobs of points and usually prevail by outscoring the opposition. That MO should work in Basha's favor this week. In the Bears two toughest games (win over Chandler and loss to Desert Ridge), they've yielded 104 points. Salpointe (6-1) at Nogales (7-0) -- Salpointe lost its chance for a perfect season in the first game of the year when it bowed to Chaparral by a point. The Lancers are currently the No. 4 seed in D-II. Nogales has plowed under all its opponents in D-III so far, but doing the same to one of D-II's better teams won't end happily and end the Apaches shot at a perfect regular season. Poston Butte (6-1) at Queen Creek (6-1) -- It's Poston Butte's time to react to adversity, meaning how will the Broncos respond to their first loss of the season last week to Perry. The loss was large in terms of margin (63-35). Earlier in the season Queen Creek beat Perry by a touchdown. Queen Creek's only loss came on the road at Catalina Foothills, also a D-II school. The teams are resting comfortably in the D-III power rankings at No. 7 and No. 5, respectively. St. David (7-0) at Pima (7-0) -- Pima is No. 1 and St. David No. 2 in the D-VI rankings in this the final week of the regular season for D-VI. Pima recorded a huge road win over northern Arizona power Mogollon last week. St. David and Pima have three common opponents - Patagonia, Valley Union and Duncan. On paper the edge goes to St. David, which is attempting to make some real noise in eight-man footballl for the first time since 2001, its last state title.
