4A Softball: Vista Grande advances with 12-2 win over Douglas

No. 12 Vista Grande beat No. 8 Douglas 12-2 Saturday afternoon in a second-round 4A softball elimination game played at Amphitheater High School. The run-rule victory came after six innings and the Spartans will play the loser of No. 2 Cactus and No. 6 Canyon del Oro Thursday night in the third elimination round.

Vista Grande (17-8) is now one of six 4A teams remaining in the state playoffs and the Spartans put together a complete game to there. First, freshman pitcher Alyssa Tinnin (17-7) fanned 10 batters and only gave up three hits while her teammates put together 12 hits, including a 2-run shot from fellow freshman Adecelli Archuleta.

Vista Grande scored two runs in the of the first on a 2-RBI single from Arianna Gonzales and the Spartans never really looked back. From the top, Ashlyn de la Cruz went 3-for-5 with three RBI, Amyah Boostedt had an RBI double, Gonzales had her hit, Brianna Jorgensen went 3-4, Archuleta had her home run and three RBI, Angelina Reyes went 2-4 with a double and two RBI and Jazzlyn Joaquin and an RBI single.

Douglas (20-6) went 10-0 in the 4A Gila Region, the first region title for the Bulldogs since 2016. Alondra Lugo got the start for Douglas. Shainah Nerio had an RBI single, Jane Aleman had an RBI single and Isabel Tanabe had the other single for the Bulldogs.

The Spartans play in one of the most difficult regions in the state with No. 1 Salpointe (22-4) and No. 6 Canyon del Oro (19-6) sitting on top of the 4A Kino Region.
