The Hamilton Huskies did it all in their 6-0 win in a non-conference game against Chaparral on Tuesday. Pitching, base running and hitting intertwined to create the winning formula for the highest-ranked varsity baseball team in Arizona.  

With this win against Chaparral, Hamilton improved to 12-4.

Right-handed pitcher Logan Saloman dazzled at home and pitched his way through six scoreless innings. The freshman revealed it did take two innings for him to settle in.

“Those first-pitch fastballs for a strike were huge for me late in this game,” Saloman said. “It really helped punch those guys out in crucial at bats towards the end.”

Saloman tallied four strikeouts through six innings and improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Will Maxey continued Hamilton’ success on the mound when he took over for Saloman in the seventh inning, punching away two of the final three outs.

Brock Selvidge got things going for the Huskies when he drove in catcher Kyle Hasler with his third home run of the season in the third inning.  Selvidge was not the only player who drove in runs via the long ball.

Senior Dustin Bermudez impressed, going 2-for-4 on the day with a double and a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

“Right off the sound of the bat, I knew that ball was gone,” Bermudez said.

Hamilton also stepped up its game from a defensive standpoint with three double plays -- an area in which head coach Mike Woods felt the team was struggling. Woods praised Saloman for being able to put the ball in play.

Woods was also enthused about the team’s base running in this game. Hamilton combined for five stolen bases through seven innings.

Although the Huskies racked up nine hits on the day, they went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

“We still haven’t hit our strides offensively,” Woods admitted. “We’re a better hitting team than this. We played well, but we could play better”
